Something about Charles...

Continue

Born and raised in Harlem New York, Charles is a Navy veteran and became an IT professional in civilian life.  Needing to fulfill his creative ambitions, Charles began working in music production and became a recording studio owner. In 2002, after 12 years, Charles switched lanes and embarked on a career in video production. Charles’ first jobs in production were as a freelance editor and as an ENG camera operator on live events.

Today, Charles is a well rounded filmmaker with high skill level as DP, editor and director. He is the owner/operator of a “boutique” production company, SeaJay5ive Films (formerly Frontline Productions). His client list includes several independent production companies and performing artists as well as Black Entertainment Television (BET), Sy-Fy Channel, Kodak Film, Open Society Foundation, NYC Media, and The Outfit Media Group to name a few. After building his production chops on PSA’s, news packages, music videos, commercials and short docs, Charles looked for new challenges and moved into the world of cinema and narrative film making. Fortunate enough to have been mentored by very talented editors and cinematographers, Charles has since become a sought after freelancer, as both a DP and editor.

Recently, Charles served as the DP and editor of the award-winning short film “UGLY” (directed by LeRon Lee), which screened at Festival de Cannes 2016 and is currently airing on HBO as of  February 2017 . A finalist in the HBO/ABFF 2016 short competition, “UGLY” is the winner of Best Short at 2016 BronzeLens Film Festival, Best Short at 2016 Baltimore International Film Festival, Best Short at 2016 Urban MediaMakers Film Festival, Best Actor at 2016 Newark International Film Festival and has been well received as an official selection at many more film festivals around the US and Europe.

Charles is the editor of the indie feature film SECRETS, which will air on BET in September 2017 after a successful festival run and theatrical release (Directed by Juwan Lee,  written by Jamal Hill & Juwan Lee).

In 2015, the award-winning short film TWO DAYS IN HARLEM (starring Yandy Smith, Omarr Salgado & Jason Hurt) was featured in Season 4 of ABFF Independent on the ASPiRE Network. In addition to being the story co-creator, Charles was also the DP and the film’s editor.  The Harlem native is also the writer/director of the award-winning, feature length documentary, AUTISTIC LIKE ME (also released in 2015), a film inspired by his own son’s autism diagnosis.

In 2016 Charles directed and edited the short film, PERCEPTIONS (written by Chad Quinn). The film boasts an amazing ensemble cast – Alimi Ballard, Charles Malik Whitfield, Malinda Williams, Wendy Davis, Cisco Reyes, Edward Fordham, Vida Guerra, Omarr Salgado, Nelcie Souffrant, Terrell Tilford and Fernando Chien. PERCEPTIONS began it’s film festival run in Fall 2016 and continues to screen at festivals around the US.

Serving as Director of Photography, Charles recently wrapped principal photography on the indie feature, BORN IN THE GAME. The film features Lil Mama, Elise Neal, Rob Riley, Jim Jones and Dennis White. BORN IN THE GAME is currently in post-production and is scheduled to be released in early 2018.

Returning to his documentary roots in 2017, Charles produced and directed the mini-documentary I AM SOMEBODY which recently premiered at a sold out World Famous Apollo Theater. In addition to upcoming featured screening dates, I AM SOMEBODY  will begin it’s film festival run in the Fall of 2017. I AM SOMEBODY was commissioned by the Campaign for Black Male Achievement foundation.
